Have u ever tried uv-b light?
They use it also for turtles.
Keep the light on for 4 hours each days and be carefull with white fish.

Hi bro Brian, can explain what is uv-b light?

And why to be careful with white fish?

I'm now using 2 x 4f T8 (don't know Chinese or Taiwanese brand) tubes for the main fish tank at night, from around 8 or 9pm - 11pm or 12am.

The sun produces this ultraviolet waves (uv-b) everyday for 3 hours (from 11AM till 3PM).
Several manufactures have good bulbs that produce this light.
I currently use a exo terra reptile uvb 100 bulb.
This bulb doesn't produce any heat.

Fish also have melanin glands, so they can get sunburned.
White fish are more sensitive because of their pigment.

So for me this is a great alternative if you can't offer your fish natural sunlight.
I expose them max 4 hours a day this light.

I see. thanks for the information, may I know where you usually get this lighting set?

Mine is just EMA T8 light set with stand, mounted on top of my tank.

Tanning your blackie under direct sunlight inside the tub with the wall algae is the best. Good black genetic play a major role here to develope blackie stay charcoal black. This what i found when i raised my blackie in my outdoor setup before.
Im a fish kichi...

Incorrect keeping will result in fading no matter how good the genetic.

For those who interested in UV(B), can try reptile FL readily available in LFS. Arcadia, Sera.....do have them, quite popular. Just change the light tube that's all. I only saw T8 before, not sure has any T5.

Thanks for all the experiences sharing, however, all blackies had passed on, sigh, due to a recent wiped out about a month ago, but only 4 survivals (not sure if I mentioned before, 1 Ryukin, 1 Oranda, 1 R/W Thai Ranchu, and 1 China Lionhead aka "Shou Xing").

Too bad I'm keeping them indoor, using EMA T8 light stand set, 2 FL light tubes. Only on for 4 - 6 hours at night before I sleep.

Now raising the fries from the eggs they laid, only intend to keep small and give out most of them, about 41 of them.

Will raise them further until colour comes out, then easier for adopters to choose. Of course, FOC.

Thanks.

Regards,
Jenson
