Goose Head Oranda & Other oranda

Post by wolverine » Mon Mar 16, 2015 10:11 am

Show some goosehead oranda, also known as highhead oranda, towerhead oranda, caphead oranda, etc.

Generally, goose Head is goldfish with enlarged head growth limited within the top portion of the head (forehead or better known as hood), but no growth on the rest of the head (cheek, mouth, chin or gill cover). Such headgrowth are commonly found in Red Cap Oranda.

Redcap Oranda, another goldfish that has the "goose head" headgrowth style.

Redcap oranda was sought after by many and it demand high price. After many years, breeders are able to breed a stable gene of redcap oranda.
It is a classic beautiful goldfish.

Uncommon headgrowth.

This black oranda has a "smooth" texture headgrowth.
Beautiful and unique in its own way.

Saw some nice Thai oranda with good body size and fin.
Unfortunately, the price is a bit high.

Enjoy.............

A new hobbyist took a shot of the oranda he bought and seek my opinion............it has been quite sometime since i participate as a judge for any goldfish competitive.  As requested by him, i sharing my opinion here.  (Appreciation is very subjective to individual and the school of thoughts, so there is no right or wrong)...........

Yellow Pointers
1. There is a "dip" between the head and the body, this is very common, but for a competitive grade oranda, usually this dip is minimum. The lesser the dip the more stout the fish will appear to be.  Deep dip, will give an overall look that the head is bigger than the body, which set the fish looks off balance.

2. First ray of the dorsal fin is important, broken first ray is hard to recover, Make the fish look weak.

3. For the fish to look stout, it is important to have a curve back and the highest point of the back curve should be above the head if measure horizontally.

4. The tail is no rise, a more desirable fin tail (caudal fin) should be alerted at 45 degree from the horizontal line.

5. The peduncle area is a tiny, and that means the fish has not build enough muscle at the peduncle to allow it to control or swim gracefully in the water.

Blue Pointers
1. Nice headgrowth.

2. Abdomen area is nicely shape, giving a well fed and health fish look, not too bloated.

Generally, this is a good fish, just that it is not a competitive fish.
