Ryukin Pattern

Post by wolverine » Wed Mar 25, 2015 12:19 am

Among the goldfish varietie, Ryukin has pretty stable gene as compared to other goldfish.
In other words, there are less deform (undesired body shape) found in a pond of new born ryukin.

Having a stable gene, breeders has more room to improve the fish in other aspect, raising their breed requirement to the next level. They focus on good colour pattern.

Saw a nice ryukin with nice red mask and a full red tail fin.
Such colour pattern usually get more points in a fish competition.

I'd like to add that Ryukins are also hardier than most other goldfish... I kept a mixture of goldfish in an outdoor pond, the ranchus generally do not do well. The Ryukins are fine.

In the past years, ryukin pattern has improve a lot.
It comes in very attractive pattern.  However the head of the ryukin tends to loss the traditional appreciate where it support to be small and pointer.

Photo is a typical nice pattern, nice around body shape, but slightly bigger head ryukin.  Smaller head will give the humpback appearance which is not so visible for bigger head ryukin.

Yes, personally i like this high hump, it gives the proper definitely of a "ryukin".
Thanks for sharing "numbertwo".
For a perfect ryukin, i wish the breeder can "improve" the line by bringing back the "small pointer head".
